In honor of the thru hikers on the A.T., Sierra Designs Light Year 1 (which survived the 2012 derecho in the Cranberry backcountry and was a staple for thru hikers),  Sierra Designs new Backcountry Quilt, and Asolo hiking boots.

The color of this beer is a yellow/orange, it didn't seem to have much of a head with my initial pour but it did have a fair amount of carbonation visible while resting. The aroma of the beer was distinctive to a Belgian style pale ale, fruity notes with a hint of hops. The first sip felt smooth with a notable aftertaste, common to Belgian pale ales, and a bite on the tongue just before you swallow. It had a good flavor, slightly bitter just the way I like it. This was another good beer in this series that I really enjoyed from start to finish. The only problem was that I didn't have another one, come on Sierra Nevada hook a guy up! On the ABV scale it was 5.3%, which is not quite what I am used to, but it has enough kick and it was an enjoyable beer to drink either way. I also really love that they named it after Myron Avery. I am planning on hiking a little bit of the A.T. around Mount Rogers in the next few months, maybe I'll take a bottle of Myron's Walk with me to celebrate the trip. Cheers America.

Ok, so I have to admit I am not a huge fan of sweet potatoes unless you mash them and put in some chipotle peppers with adobo sauce (personal preference). So my review of the Tater Ridge Scottish Ale is bitter sweet, if you'll pardon the pun. It is a transparent Scottish Ale with a dark red/amber appearance and a good head when initially poured without a lot of carbonation that is noticeable as it is resting. The smell is actually sort of thick and rich with a hint of sweet potato, I swore I could smell it in there. It feels clean and refreshing in the mouth with a good malty finish, and not too thick going down. Overall I have to say that I really enjoyed this beer even with my less than enthusiastic feelings about sweet potatoes. This is another solid beer in this 12 pack that I would happily drink again. Oh, and it has 7.0% ABV as well so it is not lacking in the kick department. Note: drinking it by the fire on a cool evening makes it that much more enjoyable.

Ok guys, beer #2 in the Beer Camp line up is the Yonder Bock. It is a Tropical Maibock and Sierra Nevada partnered with Cigar City Brewing to produce this light fruity delight.

"Yonder Bock is a summery twist on the robust blonde bock. Its silky, semi-sweet malt body is bolstered by a blend of new and experimental hops that impart bright, fruity hop aromas of guava, mango and passion fruit."

My impression of this beer is as follows: It is a dark amber beer, with a good head and lightly carbonated. It has a light fruity aroma and you can taste the mango and the fruity notes as you take your first sip. This is a smooth beer with a tingle on the tip of your tongue just before you swallow. It is slightly thicker feeling in the mouth but has a good finish. In my opinion this was a great beer and I am thus far impressed with this 12 pack. Oh, and with 7.7% ABV it is no slouch. On a side note, I noticed that this 12 pack is selling for $60 on Craigslist, so the $30 I paid seems pretty reasonable about now. I really love the can's appearance too. I purchased the Beer Camp 12 pack at Lewisburg Spirits and Wine which is just north of Interstate 64 on Jefferson Street (Route 219 North) in Lewisburg, WV.

One last note, I really loved the shirt that Joey Redner of Cigar City Brewing was wearing in this video and wondered where I can get my hands on one. Enjoy the brews America, and see you next TBD!

I have been waiting for the Beer Camp Across America 12 pack since I wrote about it in early April of this year! I thought the idea of a 12 pack with 10 bottles and 2 cans was a grand idea. When I picked it up from the local liquor store I was looking forward to each and every one. I started out with the Chico King Pale Ale, I thought it fitting since the Sierra Nevada brewery is located in Chico California. It was also where the Beer Camp Across America Tour originated on its trip heading toward Mills River North Carolina, which is its final destination on August 3rd, 2014.

"Chico King is a regal yet raucous take on the pale ale that both our breweries adore. It features a complex malt body from the use of an undermodified malt, which leads to a complex and nutty malt flavor, and a bright fruit-forward blend of Mosaic, El Dorado and Calypso hop varietals. Chico King is a beer fit for royalty."

At first pour you will notice the amber color with an notable head, if you don't try to pour it down the side of the glass like a lot of us do at times to prevent overflow. There is a malty aroma with plenty of hoppy fruity goodness when you first breath in the beer. It has a crisp initial sip and then you feel the carbonation, there is a bite to this beer but is does have a smooth finish also. My overall impression is that it is a solid pale ale and both Sierra Nevada and 3 Floyd's should be proud of this offering. The one drawback to this 12 pack was the price, it was $28, but in my opinion it is looking like it may be well worth the cost. Great work so far guys, I look forward to the next 11 beers. Today on TBD, Sierra Nevada's Southern Hemisphere Harvest Fresh Hop IPA:

Here is what Sierra Nevada is says. "Southern Hemisphere features fresh New Zealand hops that are picked, dried, and shipped to our brewery within seven days. The result is a complex beer that showcases the floral and herbal flavors and aromas of Southern Cross, Pacifica, and Motueka hops. Southern Hemisphere is part of our five-bottle Harvest series which features single hop, fresh hop, wet hop, and wild hop beers."

This is the 2nd in the lineup of Sierra Nevada's Harvest series beers. "Our five-bottle Harvest series showcases our favorite ingredient by exploring a range of hopping methods: single hop, fresh hop, wet hop, and wild hop. By working directly with breeders and growers, we can recreate this series each year using rare hops early in their development."

My initial impression from the first pour is that the beer is an amber color with fairly good carbonation and a good head that is frothy with large airy bubbles (I recommend letting it breath for a few minutes if you pour it too soon the head will come out flat as did my initial pour, the second pour was much better). You can really smell the citrus notes in this IPA. The first sip you will notice the crisp flavor of the beer, no bitter after taste, very smooth and enjoyable. It is not as thick feeling on the palate as you would suspect which is a nice surprise. My overall impression of the beer is that it is reasonably priced considering that you get a 24 ounce bottle for around $5 and that is about the going rate of most pints at your local Irish Pub. So would I recommend this beer to a friend, you know it. I would also buy it more often than some of the other higher priced beers as you get two for the price of one in this case. Heck, I may even splurge and buy a couple for our next MSO trip. Thanks Sierra Nevada I look forward to trying the other 4!
