orb and solar power. @rawlemon1 #renewableenergy #sun @indiegogo

Designed by German architect Andre Broessel, the Rawlemon Solar Generator uses a large glass sphere lens, which collects diffused light from multiple angles.  The shape of the lens focuses this light into a fine beam, much like a maginfiying glass, that can deliver a greater amount of sunlight; around 70 percent more than traditional PV panels installed on a solar tracker.

Rawlemon is running an Inidegogo campaign until March 1, 2014.  Pledge your support and chose from various options including the installation of a roof top generator or a budget friendly cell phone charger.

coal slurry spill. #WVwatercrisis #Water4WV #coal #NC @kenwardjr @wvgazette @cnn

Just over 30 days after the Freedom Industries chemical spill on the Elk River in Charleston, WV, another devastating side effect of coal is impacting what some people refer to as "Chemical Valley."  This morning, news surfaced that coal slurry had poured into Fields Creek from a Kanawaha County coal processing facility.  Let's just hope they catch this crud before it dumps into an already tainted Kanawha River.

As referenced from Ken Ward Jr. and the Charleston Gazette, "coal slurry contains a variety of substances that could be more toxic than crude MCHM," the chemical that spilled into the Elk River on January 9, 2014.  In fact, coal slurry contains, "other coal-cleaning chemical and various metals."

Its been a tough month for central WV residents.  Not to mention, its been very trying for some NC and VA residents too.

As resourced from CNN, just over a week ago, Duke Energy announced a spill of up to 82,000 tons of coal ash and up to 27 million gallons of basin water into the Dan River.  To give this some perspective, try imagining 32 Olympic size swimming pools filled coal ash instead of clean water.

With all of the other alternatives out there for producing clean energy, we can't quite understand why people are so connected with such a dirty resource.

awning. @rhinorack @yakimaracks #overland #roofrack

Need some shade on the trail or maybe some shelter close to the truck that's reliable?  After spending weekends in the woods piecing together old tarps and draining off pools of water during heavy storms, a good awning was added to the wish list.

We opted for the Rhino Rack Sunseeker 2.5M Awning after countless hours researching on the internet.  It comes with various accessories and we added the Awning Extension for some extra square footage.  We'll post some shots of the Sunnseeker and Extension set up on Twitter soon.  Unfortunately, the packaged was damaged en route and delivered missing the mounting hardware.  Thankfully, persistence over the holidays resulted in new parts.

We had to make some adjustments to mounting because the parts delivered were slightly different from what was supposed to be included per the parts list.  We pieced together what was shipped and dug out some old Yakima parts to put it all together.

Since there wasn't much for help on the internet, we're opting to post this short gallery to aid those who want to mount their Sunseeker to a Yakima base rack.

First, locate/purchase some Yakima clamps.  These are universal clamps; they'll work just fine.

The Yakima clamps with the supplied mounting bracket from Rhino Rack.  Research shows this bracket is a universal bracket purchased as an option from Rhino Rack for mounting various types of awnings.

Just stretch the Yakima clamps over the bar ends.

Two Yakima clamps on the front bar and two on the back.

We opted to use two Yakima clamps to give the extra support for the Sunseeker bracket.

M8 x 1.25 x 50 stainless bolts will proved years of rust free support.

A stainless washer on top and bottom plus a stainless nylon locking nut.

Mounted and ready to be tightened.

Don't over do it.  The Yakima clamps have a tight grip.  We squeezed them shut enough to match up the plastic channels on the clamps.

Ready for the awning.  We actually flipped the clamps over to the drivers's side after this shot.

Insert the supplied channel bolts and move the awning into place.

Stainless washer and nylon locking nut, tighten and you'd read to roll.

firefly. @crickettrailer #efficient #design #overland #simple #living

This is where true creativity meets functional efficiency.  Meet the Taxa Firefly, designed by Garrett Finney formerly an architect/designer for the International Space Station.  This thing is sweet!  Maybe even a pop-up and extendable version for a short bed pickup would be more practical.

Hey Garrett, need Mountain State Overland to take this thing off the beaten path to each destination?  We'll shoot you an email bud.

This guy has simplicity, functionality and efficiency flowing through his veins.  Check out this short video tour of the Taxa Firefly and learn about other designs at Cricket Trailers.
